If your child has been sent home from school due to suspension, the first thing you should do is sit down with your child and get his or her side of the story before contacting the school. Reserve judgment until you have spoken to the principle. Speak to the principal and teacher to find out what rule or rules your child broke and ask to see copies of the reports leading to the suspension. Take this opportunity to explain your child’s side of the story.

During the suspension, make sure your child’s day remains routine – these are not “do-nothing” days just because he or she does not have to go to school. Make a list of chores and collect missed work from the school. Be sure to implement a punishment at home, such as a reduction or removal of a privilege for the period of the suspension.

Most important, discuss the issue with your child. Use this as an opportunity to talk about choices and why the punishment occurred. If the suspension occurred because of emotional issues, seek help for your child through a medical professional. It is best to rectify any problems leading to the suspension before it becomes a repeat occurrence.
