When it comes to having your child self-direct their own learning, there are 3 great technological resources they can tap into:

  1. Educational Apps and Games

Not all “educational” apps and games are created equally. It is important to pay attention the programs you download for your child. Make sure the app or game promotes problem solving and critical thinking instead of simple, repetitive tasks or videos and songs.

  1. Personal Learning Network (PLN)

These are social networks (created through a blog, Facebook or Twitter to name a few) created by the learner based on their interest in order to connect with like-minded people. There is a great explanation by Lisa Nielson on her blog.

  1. Online Education Resources (OER)

OERs are free online learning resources available to the public. Lisa Nielson also explains this resource here.
