The adage, children should be seen not heard, should be applied to adults in order to encourage your child to be independent.
We can accompany them in their activities. but as much as possible take on the role of an observer while they are playing etc instead of directing them on what to do. If they have problems, we should wait for them to ask for help. Do not rush in to help them, as long they are not in any dangerous situation. Often you will see them coming up with innovative solutions to problems.
On the flip side, we should engage their help or get them involved in daily chores. As many parents with a younger child would have observed, their older child are keen to be involved and help out with the younger child. By giving them responsibilities that are age appropriate, they will feel empowered and more confident in their abilities. |
