How was it like 25 years or 50 years ago? How were kids raised at those times?

These days, education is very different from when I was in school. It’s really fascinating because it wasn’t THAT long ago, but when I look at how they teach my 1st-grade-aged daughter, there’s a lot that’s different.

For starters, computers were not in the classroom when I was in school. We had a computer lab, but back then, computers were really archaic. We didn’t have tablets to work off of. There wasn’t a massive push to get into college either. When I walk into my daughter’s elementary school, it has all the flags of all the colleges in my state. This is elementary school! When I was in elementary school, we were encouraged to pursue our interests, like make art projects, or simply frolic around on the playground.

In kindergarten last year, during spring break, my daughter was given the option to write a book report. Being that she was just learning to read and write, I found it really odd. I never had to do that in kindergarten.

On the one hand, it’s really awesome that we have all these tools at our fingertips to access information immediately and teach it to our kids, but on the other hand, it’s creating a society of instant rewards, which is making for a generation of really impatient kids. Still, it’s interesting to watch it evolve and to see my kids outsmart me on the iPad.
