Children can be natural innovators, using their imaginations to dream up different adventures. Just watch your child play sometime and you should see dolls and action figures accomplishing different feats. As adorable as it is, it’s also important to let your child have these moments because it allows her to become a confident person with highly developed social skills. It also encourages her to be a better learning. So encourage that creativity by doing these things: Give your child a creative space It doesn’t even need to be a big space. It just needs to be an area that is just for your child to be creative in. Your child should have complete control over this space to do anything creative that she wishes from building with Legos to dressing up her dolls. Let go of control In this space of your child’s, rules should be invalid. By that, I mean that it should be a place of calm and creativity. If she’s playing a game and is making up her own rules, just go with it. This is all about creativity. Stop planning everything A huge mistake parents these days make is to schedule every afternoon or weekend with back to back activities and outings. Some of us call this free time. Whatever you want to call it, it’s completely necessary. Let your child play without structure, and make sure you get in there and play with them too! Ask for answers Read to your child and ask about the story you’re reading. The important thing here is to be open-ended because there are no right or wrong answers. Ask her what kind of food she thinks Pinkalicious eats for example and enjoy the creativity that she’ll use to dream up an answer. Take them to new places If you want creative and innovative kids, you need to take them places. Of course, you don’t need to do this every single day, but they should be familiar with libraries, museums, and outdoor places like parks or the beach. Show them the world and they’ll show you the power of their creativity. Give them the tools to be good at what they love When your child is interested in something, help them harness that love by giving them what they need. If your child likes art or painting, be sure to get her what she needs to express herself using this medium. Maybe she loves soccer or t-ball, so take her to join a team. For anything she loves to do, don’t forget to cheer her on and applaud her efforts. Let yourself be creative Lead by example with creativity. We are all busy but one of the best things you can do for your child as well as yourself is to take a moment to sit with your child, grab a crayon and start coloring or help them build a house out of blocks. It creates a perfect bonding moment and teaches your child that everyone needs creativity in their lives. |
