Ah, the great bedtime battle! Every parent has been there before. But the key to remember is that you’re in charge and you’ve got to rule your roost. That doesn’t mean that you need to scream and yell though. Bedtime should be a time to unwind for everyone in the house.

What you need to do is set a consistent bedtime routine and stick to it every single night. You might face some resistance in the beginning but children thrive on routine and consistency and will begin to anticipate it. The earlier you start your bedtime routine with your kids, the easier it will be as they age.

Dim the lights
Bright lights tend to over-stimulate, especially with children. Use dimmer switches and put on more mellow lighting after dinner to help kids unwind.

Give a bath
Bath time isn’t just for getting clean. It serves a purpose to help soothe and relax.

Read a story or two
All children love to hear stories. Let them pick what they want to hear and read to them. My kids take turns choosing a book every night.

If I ever deviate from our bedtime routine, my kids get very upset. So I stick to it every single night unless we have some special circumstance like a visiting family member or a unique event. By doing this, my kids are tired and ready for sleep at bedtime and they never fuss or fight about it.
