Every day we have the chance to build stronger relationships with our kids. The key is asking them questions about their days. Questions should ask about classes as well as other things. Here are some great questions to open up dialog with your kids about their school day. What did you like the most about your day? What was something new you learned today? Was there anything funny that happened in class? Who did you talk to during lunch time? Are there any exciting events coming up at school? Can you tell me something cool you saw while at school? What did you do to help a friend out today? You can probably think of many more where that came from. They key is to ask questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” response so you can get a good conversation going. But whatever you ask, remember that you need to listen. Don’t interject advice or opinions where they aren’t wanted either or you’ll be unlikely to be asked when something important comes up. And don’t aimlessly listen where you say “Mmm-hmm” to everything your child says. Ask follow-up questions when appropriate and stay interested. It will keep the lines of communication open between you and your child, which become lifelines the older they get. |
